Making a Will is not the most cheerful of subjects, but it is one of the most selfless acts you can make.

One in five people die without making a Will, often assuming that everything will automatically go to their partner or family, which isn't necessarily so. A Will is the only way to ensure that your wishes are carried out after you die.

Naturally, your first consideration in making a Will is to take care of your family and friends. Once you have provided for them, you might like to consider the inclusion of a Legacy to charity. Not only can a Legacy reduce or eliminate the liability to Inheritance Tax, it is a good opportunity to help others.

Making a Will is generally straightforward and not too costly.

To make a Will, follow these important steps:

1. Decide whom you want to benefit
2. Choose a Solicitor
3. Go prepared - list your beneficiaries and list your assets, which can form the basis of your discussion with your Solicitor.
4. Appoint an Executor - the person who will ensure that all your wishes, as detailed in your Will, are followed.
5. Have your Will witnessed - two witnesses will be required and these must not be beneficiaries to the Will.
6. Keep you Will in a safe place.
7. Be wary of Home Made Wills, as they can cause problems. The slightest mistake can invalidate your Will.
8. Keep your Will updated - if your circumstances alter, for example you divorce or marry.
